FAQs

WHAT IS A SPOTZIP?

A SpotZip is an area on the map with a zip and phrase, about 4 x 4m square.

We use 10 characters for the SpotZip. The 10 characters can also be represented with a 5 word phrase. The phrase makes a sentence of the form adjective, noun, verb, adjective, noun.

The premise is that the phrase is easier to say and remember than the gps coordinates, and the 10 characters are easier to write, type or store.

WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT THE SPOTZIP SYSTEM?

SpotZip is based on zooming into the map. The more you zoom in, the longer the zip gets and the more words are used.

Another way of thinking about this is that
Witty Spacemen Squeeze is inside
Witty Spacemen which is inside
Witty

This allows a familiarity with the SpotZip words to be formed in a particular area. For example, all locations within Lusaka, Zambia are contained within Witty Spices.

Remembering the first word will get you into the right part of the world. The second word will most likely get you in the right city and so on.

HOW CAN I FIND MY OWN SPOTZIP ZIP?

To find your own SpotZip Zip

  • Open the map page and find the Search by section
  • Use the Find your current location option:

  • (This will use your device's GPS)
  • Move around on the map, zoom in etc until the centre of the map is representing the location you are interested in.
  • Share it or store it for later. Better still, try and remember it!

MY COMPANY USES ADDRESSES, HOW CAN SPOTZIP HELP?

Part 2 of 2

If your company is storing addresses for delivery (or any other reason)

There are lots of options (2)
  • You can download the SpotZip functions so that your own systems can easily move between zips, phrases and latitude and longitude - no need for expensive post-code lookup software. If you're displaying the SpotZip zip or phrase you can link to the SpotZip site with a simple URL: https://smap.world/map/ **code**
  • You can put a full SpotZip search tool within your website. This allows users to select their SpotZip visually on the map without leaving your site.
  • Speak to us about other integration options.
WHAT ARE THE SPOTZIP CHARACTERS AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?

Part 1 of 2

We tried a lot of different groups of characters and a lot of different word dictionaries. The driving forces are as follows:

  • No vowels because then you can form rude words.
  • We need characters that don't look like other characters. For example the letter S looks like the number 5 so we chose not to include S.
  • The words in the dictionaries must be as easy to say and spell as possible.
WHAT ARE THE SPOTZIP CHARACTERS AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?

Part 2 of 2

So we chose:

2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 C D F G H J K L M N P Q R T V X Y

We found that basing SpotZip on a 5 x 5 grid with two characters per word was the best compromise. The main rival to this grid was the 4 x 4 grid with 3 characters per word, but that required too many words in each dictionary which made them hard to spell and say. A smaller dictionary also meant the lookup lists would load faster and we were able to remove a lot of words with rather negative meanings.

Tips

LOCALITY

Take advantage of the fact that people you communicate with in the same city probably have a SpotZip that has the first one or two words the same as you. For example:

  • Central London is all Potent Halls, and in fact all of london is one of Potent: Halls, Spaniels, Tags or Origins.
  • Everywhere in Lusaka is Witty Spices.
  • Paris is one of Potent Hints or Potent Laptops
  • Barcelona: Ongoing Highways
This means that you will generally have to only remember the last 2 or 3 words.
PRECISION

You might find that 4 words are enough to describe where you are. 4 words represent a 100 x 100 m square

Someone arriving at that 100 x 100 m square would probably be able to see you if you are not in a built up area, or maybe ask around.
PHONE USERS

SpotZip works best in full screen mode, especially on the Map. One way to put your phone into full screen mode is to rotate it into landscape and then back into portrait Mode. Android users also have a button on the home screen title bar:
